Dr. Porto

Dr. Mariano Porto, a board-certified neurologist, joined Four Peaks Neurology in 2021. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2011. In 2015, Dr. Porto completed his residency at UC Irvine, and in 2016 he completed his fellowship in clinical neurophysiology. at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

During his fellowship, Dr. Porto conducted clinical research on epilepsy, and this left an impression on him. Although he is a general neurologist, Dr. Porto has developed a particular interest in treating migraines and epilepsy. This is because he knows that effectively treating burdensome conditions such as migraines and epilepsy can substantively improve a patient’s quality of life.

Dr. Porto’s subsequent experiences as he rotated through the University hospitals, Veterans Administration hospitals, and the Epilepsy Foundation fueled his passion to treat epilepsy. His experience treating grateful veterans was a meaningful experience that left an indelible impact on him. While working at the epilepsy foundation, as Dr. Porto treated epilepsy patients, Dr. Porto witnessed firsthand the positive impact that adequate and effective treatment had on his epilepsy patients’ quality of life. When Dr. Porto transitioned to private practice in 2016, he took with him the lessons and experiences that molded him during his rotations.

While in private practice in San Antonio, Dr. Porto encountered and treated a wide variety of patients afflicted with different ailments, including dementia, strokes, seizures, headaches, tremors, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, traumatic brain injury, and vertigo. It was during his time in San Antonio that Dr. Porto chose to share his knowledge with others by educating medical and PA students.

One of Dr. Porto’s specialties is performing long-term EEGs. Dr. Porto interprets long term video EEGs to help with refractory epilepsy cases and to better characterize seizure events. Dr. Porto’s experience conducting long term EEGs has helped him diagnose epilepsy in patients whose epilepsy diagnosis was inaccurately ruled out, even after multiple consultations with multiple doctors. Conducting long-term EEGs has aided Dr. Porto in understanding the importance of accounting for each patients’ individual symptoms.

In his free time, Dr. Porto enjoys exploring nature by hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, traveling to new places, and biking. When he is not traversing the great outdoors, Dr. Porto enjoys spending time with family, and playing board games. Dr. Porto’s favorite board game is “Sequence.”
